The officer and an unnamed "subject" were both shot during an "exchange of gunfire," authorities said previously.

In a Thursday afternoon press conference, a state police spokesman said SPD officers were investigating a pair of shootings — one on the 400 block of Harrison Avenue and one on the 300 block of Prospect Avenue — when the gunfight broke out.

Both the officer and the other person remain at Geisinger CMC in "critical but stable" condition, according to police.

Authorities believe the two prior shootings were "not random but targeted," and said they were gang-related. No victims were located by police at either scene, they noted.

Troopers and Lackawanna County detectives are handling the investigation at the request of Scranton police, officials said. Federal agencies including the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the US Marshals Service, and the Department of Homeland Security are also assisting.

"Not all actors" involved with the shootings have been identified, troopers said. Anyone with information is asked to call PSP's Troop R at 570-963-3156.
